چکیده

Because handhelds are inexpensive compared to other types of computers, users can possess more than one of these devices, each having a specialized user interface. Although handhelds can be used in isolation, they also can interoperate with other devices through wireless networks including WiFi and Bluetooth. Further, by using inexpensive components, developers can integrate different technologies into one device, leading to one of the fastest-growing markets for handhelds. Worldwide, about 30 million PDAs are in use, but this pales in comparison to the 1.3 billion mobile phone devices currently being used (www. cellular.co.za/stats/stats-main.htm). Increasingly, these mobile smart phones offer PDA-like capabilities. Analysts predict that in 2003 smart phone sales will reach 4 million units in Europe, for the first time outpacing sales of PDAs (http://search. internet.com/www.rimroad.com). In the US, predictions indicate that the smart phone segment of the phone market will increase from 8.5 percent in 2003 to 35 percent in 2007, while PDA sales will increase from 6.9 million to 17.1 million in the same period (www.wirelessdevnet.com/news/ 2003/169/news7.html). In an environment in which the circumstances make using a laptop inappropriate, a handheld device offers a convenient alternative. For example, using a laptop isn’t feasible when standing or walkThe increasing consumer use of handhelds has paralleled an increase in research addressing technology issues related to these devices and their potential use in novel applications.

The UbicompBrowser

In this paper we introduce the UbicompBrowser, a system that applies ubiquitous computing to the World-Wide Web. The UbicompBrowser extends the World-Wide Web in two ways into our everyday environments. First, it extends the browser concept by replacing the standard web user interface with a handheld access and control device and surrounding output devices. This ubiquitous user interface is det...

Ubiquitous Secretary: A Ubiquitous Computing Application Based on Web Services Architecture

Due to the extensive availability of wireless internet connectivity and low cost light weight mobile devices, an omnipresent customizable service is not a vision anymore. With enhanced wireless connectivity, the handheld mobile devices (PDA, smart phone, cell phone, etc.) can act as a digital personal secretary, being employed in all aspects of life for the purposes ranging from accessing wide ...

A Framework for Supporting Autonomous Agents in Ubiquitous Computing Environments

Handheld computers allow user mobility in pervasive environments and give users access to computing resources regardless of their location. These devices however, often operate disconnected from the network thus reducing the opportunities for spontaneous interoperation with other users or devices. Autonomous agents can enable spontaneous interaction by representing users, as well as services. T...

Handhelds for Digital Libraries

The present chapter introduces digital library services’ utilization through handheld devices, such as personal digital assistants (PDAs) and smartphones. It argues that handheld devices proliferation justifies the term digital library in terms of anywhere-anytime access, and retrieval and management of information. Furthermore, these devices constitute powerful information harvesting tools tha...

Token-Based Acces to Digital Information

Several systems have been designed where a physical object is used to access digital information that is stored outside the object, but as yet no common vocabulary exists to describe such systems. We introduce a schema with three types of physical objects that can be linked to digital information: Containers are generic objects used to move information between different devices or platforms; to...

Contemporary Issues in Handheld Computing Research

Mobile phones have become ubiquitous in today’s society. However, mobile users are no longer satisfied with simple phones but instead expect ever more powerful functions to be available from their mobile devices. Advanced phones known as smartphones allow mobile users to perform a wide variety of advanced handheld functions such as browsing the mobile Internet or finding a nearby theater showin...
